How to Manage Financial Stress

How to Manage Financial Stress How to Manage Financial Stress How to Manage Financial StressDon’t let bad credit and money woes impact your health.Sweaty palms. Trouble sleeping. Adrenaline coursing through your veins. For many of us, these are telltale symptoms of stress. If these are symptoms you experience while worrying about bad credit, unexpected expenses, saving for the future, or how to make ends meet each month, you are not alone.According to the 2017 Stress in America report from the American Psychological Association (APA), financial stress is the second most common stressor in the United States. Sixty-two percent of respondents reported experiencing financial stress; about one-third of adults said they worry about unexpected expenses, three-in-10   expressed concerns about saving for retirement, and a quarter of Americans reported “the ability to pay for life’s essentials” is stressful.Stress can physically and mentally affect your body. When left unmanaged, stress can become chronic, leaving you physically and emotionally o verwhelmed and running on empty, which can translate into serious health problems. Learn how stressing about bad credit, bills, and other financial woes can have a long-term impact on your overall well-being.How does financial stress affect you?According to the APA, chronic stress can affect almost every system in your body and lead to all sorts of health issues from anxiety to a sluggish immune system. Chronic stress happens when daily stressors are not managed well or outright ignored, as well as in response to traumatic events. The longer the stress goes unchecked, the most likely it is to turn into a health issue like high blood pressure, or contribute to one like depression. Let’s take a closer look at the effects financial stress can have on various parts of your body:Musculoskeletal system. This system includes your muscles and bones. Stress tends to make our muscles tense up â€" it’s a way we try to protect ourselves in anticipation of pain or injuries. Usually, our musc les tend to relax when we get our stress under control, but chronic stress can mean that your muscles never get a chance to relax. This can lead to chronic pain and even tension headaches and migraines.Respiratory system. This is the system that allows us to breathe. Stress can sometimes constrict our breathing, which can lead to rapid breathing or shortness of breath. These symptoms are often worse for those who already have respiratory diseases, such as emphysema or asthma.Cardiovascular system. This is the system that pumps blood around our bodies, which in turn delivers oxygen and takes away waste. When a stressor is upon us, hormones like adrenaline, cortisol, and noradrenaline pump through our blood. For early humans, these hormones helped protect them and give them what they needed to fight or flee. This response is still with us today, and as a result, our heart rate and blood pressure increases when we are stressed. Usually, once the stress passes, everything returns to norm al, but with chronic stress, our heart rate and blood pressure can stay elevated, wearing down parts of the cardiovascular system. This can contribute to an increased risk for cardiovascular events, like heart attacks and strokes.Endocrine system. Your endocrine system is a network of glands that regulate hormones in your body. When something stressful happens, your endocrine system initiates a response that engages what’s called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which produces steroid hormones like cortisol. Cortisol and similar hormones also work with your immune system to fight infections and reduce inflammation. Chronic stress increases hormone output, which can interfere with the communication between the immune system and the HPA axis. This can lead to a weakened immune system and has been linked to mental health issues.Gastrointestinal system. Did you know that there is a strong link between your gut and your brain? There is. Chronic stress can cause gastrointe stinal issues such as bloating, upset stomach, heartburn, and more. Disruptions in your gut caused by stress can also affect your mood and cognitive abilities, thanks to the gut-brain connection.Nervous system. Your nervous system is the control center for all your body’s other functions. There are several components, and when stress occurs, they enable the stress response in all the systems explored above. Chronic stress leaves the systems activated, which wears you out physically and emotionally.Reproductive system. No, not even your reproductive system is safe from stress. In men, stress can cause low libido, sperm mobility, and sperm count. In women, it can pause menstruation, cause irregular or painful periods, lower libido, decrease fertility, and jeopardize the health of pregnancies. This is all serious stuff! So how do you manage stress? It often comes down to making changes to your lifestyle and behavior. How can you manage financial stress? The thing about financial stress is it often comes when money is tight. Some forms of stress managementâ€"like regular yoga classes at your local studioâ€"can add up and become expensive. That’s why we’ve put together some budget-friendly ways to manage stress.Take time for self-care. This can include exercise and meditation, both of which have been proven to reduce the physical and mental symptoms of stress. According to educational psychologist Elisa Robyn, this need not cost any money. There are many free health and wellness programs available for streaming on YouTube, such as yoga, tai chi, weight training, and other forms of exercise, she says. “Because these are used at home, there is no time spent traveling to a gym, and the classes can be broken into smaller segments,” so that you can juggle them with your other responsibilities. It might not even need to take you much time to feel the effects. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a 10-minute walk may be as good for your me ntal health as a 45-minute workout. Exercise releases endorphins, which can combat the negative effects of stress.Robyn also advises scheduling “no-worry” time, which can take the form of meditation. Meditation is a kind of mental practice that helps you train your awareness and attention. This can help you manage your mental state, returning you to calmness and stability. If you do not yet know how to medicate, there are many guided meditations available online for free.Unplug from negative influences. “The internet, specifically social media, can add to financial stress if you follow people that you are tempted to compare your financial situation to,” says Logan Allec, a CPA and owner of personal finance site Money Done Right. His advice? Unplugâ€"or at least unfollow.   “If you are going through a period of significant financial stress, unplugging from social media completely can help,” he says. “Eliminating the temptation to compare yourself to everyone you see on social media when you are in a financially stressful situation can be quite freeing.”Focus on the positive. “Remember your financial situation is temporary,” says Dr. Randi Nelson, a board-certified pediatrician, financial wellness expert, and author of Ladynomics: A Woman’s Prescription for Wealth and Financial Well-Being. “The key is to remain positive while seeking solutions to your problems and to express gratitude, although you may feel that you have very little to be thankful for.”Robyn agrees. “Spend a few minutes every day focused on how, at that moment, you are warm and safe and dry,” she says. She said she herself used this sentiment as a mantra, which helped her focus on the positive in life instead of the negative. It’s also important to remember that money isn’t everything and your financial troubles do not define you. Robyn recommends taking time to account for all that you are proud of in your life. “Are you a great parent? Think about that. Are you going to school to improve your life?” she says. “Be proud,” and take stock of your accomplishments.Identify your specific stressors and create a plan. Sometimes, financial problems can seem overwhelming and impossible to overcome. This doesn’t have to be true. The first step is to identify your individual financial stressors â€" student loans, credit card debt, unstable budget â€" and to create a plan to resolve them. Nelson recommends for the plan to involve “taking baby steps to reducing and eliminating financial issues.”Small steps are easier than giant leaps, which can seem overwhelming. The APA agrees that committing a plan to paper can itself reduce stress, and taking actionâ€"like contacting creditors to ask for help and payment plansâ€"can get the ball moving forward if you are stuck in a spiral.Increase financial literacy. A lot of financial stress is caused simply by not having a firm grasp of the basics. The internet is full of resources to help you learn about your finances, including podcasts, financial blogs like this one, and financial literacy courses, like our very own OppU.Increased financial literacy can help you create a workable budget, start saving for an emergency fund, and avoid high-risk predatory loans, like bad credit loans, no credit check loans, and payday loansâ€"the kinds of financial products that are almost certain to contribute to your financial stress and not lessen it.ContributorsLogan Allec  is a CPA and owner of the personal finance website Money Done Right. After spending his twenties grinding it out in the corporate world and paying off more than $35,000 in student loans, he dropped everything, and in 2017, launched Money Done Right. Equal Employment Opportunity Free Essays

One of the key responsibilities of a human resource management professional is the management of diversity and equal employment opportunities within the organisation. Equal employment opportunity refers to the situation in which every individual has access to employment and its benefits. Equal employment opportunity (EEO) refers to the outcomes of human resource management policies and practices and employee and management behaviour. We will write a custom essay sample on Equal Employment Opportunity or any similar topic only for you Order Now EEO is aimed at transforming an organisation; reviewing the processes associated with the creation and use of power by some groups; and implementation of new measures and policies which attempt to remove bias from procedures such as recruitment and promotion. Managing diversity accepts that the workforce consists of a diverse population of people, with visible and non-visible differences including sex, age, background, race, disability, personality, and work style. There has been a lot of debate recently about affirmative action (AA). Affirmative action (also known as positive action) is where organisations take special initiatives to redress perceived gender or ethnic imbalances in the workforce. At first, affirmative action aimed to eliminate racial imbalance in hiring policies; later it was extended to protect people of color, women, older people and people with disabilities. Equal opportunity laws ban discrimination. Affirmative action goes further by requiring employers to take â€Å"affirmative† steps to achieve a balanced representation of workers. Affirmative action may take many forms. One example would be providing special training solely for women. However, some people see affirmative action as an insult. Some people see affirmative action as assuming that they are not capable of success based on their own merits. This paper will examine whether affirmative action is an insult to women and any other member of an AA target group. The argument put forward for affirmative action is that it allows minority groups, who would otherwise be disadvantaged, to get to the starting line and to allow for a level ‘playing field†. Affirmative action is used as a tool to break the perceived injustice and discrimination of the past. In Australia, the Affirmative Action (Equal Employment Opportunity for Women) Act 1986 requires the removal of direct and indirect discrimination through the application of the merit principle in employment policies. Contemporary writing puts forward the theory that managing diversity should be based on ‘no preferential treatment†. Although there is no specific quota system in the above Australian legislation , AA has in the past often been associated with the requirement to maintain certain quotas based on minority group representation. A move to ‘no preferential treatment† means that individuals are not given preference for employment based on specific group membership. Giving preferential treatment to a minority group is sometimes referred to as the ‘remedial action† AA. This means that whereas some people are benefiting by virtue of their group membership, other individuals are excluded, even though their developmental need might be as great. Singling out individuals based on a minority quality (sex, religion etc) can be seen to be an insult to that individual. This is particularly true if the individual has all the attributes and skills that would normally mean success. The impression given is not about fairness or equal opportunity, but rather about achieving numbers or targets. There is also ‘research that suggests that, as currently construed, affirmative action policy can thwart rather than promote workplace equity. The stigma associated with affirmative action can fuel rather than debunk stereotypical thinking and prejudiced attitudes†. Managing diversity should not focus on minority groups. Managing diversity should focus on the problems of the individual. It should focus on identifying what the individual needs in terms of development. Actions ought to be targeted on any individual who has a particular development need and not restricted to those who are members of a particular group. However, all of the above is idealistic. There has often been a realism in the marketplace that contrasts the above. In some respects, affirmative action has been a necessary tool to ensure that minority groups have representation in theorganisation. The goal has been not so much to achieve a quota or a target, but rather to force down the walls of discrimination that many organisations have had in the past. In this respect, affirmative action should not be seen as an insult to minority groups. For as some minorities may have all the skills necessary to gain a certain appointment or job, it is all but useless if the employer (or the person who makes the decision on who gets hired) has a bias against that person based on their minority attribute (whether that be sex, religion or what not). Women, in general, have been the main beneficiaries of affirmative action. The number of women entering the professions, including medicine, law and accounting, has increased substantially in 30 years. Women of all races have increased their share of professional positions in corporations, and it is arguable that there would be no women police officers, fire fighters, bus drivers or construction workers without affirmative action. Affirmative action is not an insult to women (or other minority groups), but rather a method to ensure that the glass ceilings that have implicitly existed in the workforce in the past are destroyed. Affirmative action does not mean that minority groups are employed simply based on minority attributes. Affirmative action means that employers make that extra effort to ensure that their organisation reflects the wider community. However, women have yet to achieve equality in the work place. There is still a large portion of the female workforce working in a narrow range of low-paying, low-status jobs. They are under-represented in many occupations. Up until the 1970s, there were few women in law schools; few opportunities to go outside of jobs traditionally reserved for women. Many women face invisible employment barriers that block access to advancement opportunities into higher-paying jobs with increased responsibilities. Some women are stuck in low-wage jobs with little or no opportunity to advance into supervisory or managerial positions. When women do obtain managerial jobs, they often are confined to specific departments with less authority and outside the track to upper-level, senior management jobs. These ‘glass ceiling† barriers prematurely halt the progress of women in the workplace and prevent them from developing their full potential and talents as workers. Affirmative action programs help to shatter the glass ceiling because they expand opportunities for qualified women and can lead to higher wages, more advancement opportunities, and improved financial security. One of the key responsibilities of a human resource management professional is the management of diversity and equal employment opportunities within the organisation. One method of ensuring equal opportunity within an organisation is by the use of affirmative action. Affirmative action is a policy to encourage equal opportunity and to level the playing field for groups of people who have been and are discriminated against. Affirmative action has been considered essential to assuring that jobs are genuinely and equally accessible to qualified persons, without regard to their sex, racial, or ethnic characteristics. Affirmative action was not established to punish any particular group or place people into positions they are not qualified for. It was established to involve everybody; to have the opportunities for economic, academic and social success accessible to everybody. It should not be regarded as an insult to women or other minority groups. Affirmative action does not mean that minority groups are employed simply based on minority attributes. Affirmative action means that employers make that extra effort to ensure that their organisation reflects the wider community. Affirmative action has been useful to society. Through equal opportunity programs, workplaces are much more diverse than several decades ago, because of the opportunities for seeing work and education have been expanded to include everyone. Affirmative action should not be regarded as an insult. It should be regarded as a tool and medium that ensures that suitably qualified people are provided with jobs, and not discriminated against based on a minority attribute. Womens Rights free essay sample

Womens Rights Women had it difficult in the mid-1800s to early 1900s. There was a difference in the treatment of men and women then. Married women were legally dead in the eyes of the law. Women were not even allowed to vote until August 1920. They were not allowed to enter professions such as medicine or law. There were no chances of women getting an education then because no college or university would accept a female with only a few exceptions. Women were not allowed to participate in the affairs of the church. Tuesday, November 2, 1920, the day women voted for the first time. The New York Times called it, â€Å"The greatest voting day in the city’s history. † It was a wonderful day for women all across the country. All of their hard work had finally paid off. The Women’s Rights Movement changed the way women were seen. Before the passage of the 19th Amendment, women in many states were not given the right to vote. We will write a custom essay sample on Womens Rights or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The Women’s Rights movement was caused by many factors, greatly impacted the society of the early 1900s and changed American society forever. For all of history, women have stood behind men as companions and supporters. Women have been treated as if they were politically and socially inferior. Islam is the second largest religion in the world today. Many do not understand the religion Islam and women’s rights in the Islamic faith. Furthermore, our society has the idea that Muslim women are weak, and disrespected. As it is said in the Muslims book called the Qur’an And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them according to what is equitable; but men have a degree of advantage over them. In my opinion,  Islam regards women as equal to men in many aspects and that women have a unique place in Islam, and should have rights relating to their spiritual, economic, social, political, and legal rights. Throughout history, womens from Lebanon have been dominated by men, and were not given their human rights, simply because they were women. Nevertheless, starting the eighteenth century, some women started showing their dissatisfaction with their unfair conditions. They came to realize that since they were human beings, then they must have equal rights as men. For example, the role of women was to take care of the home while the husband was winning bread for the family. In addition to this, very few women could read and write, and therefore, they did not have the means to express themselves, or to start organized actions. With the rise of equality of all men and democracy by the end of the eighteenth century, the cause of women started, particularly in the year 1792 when the first feminist publication was written by Mary Wollstonecraft, a British woman who was devoted to the cause of liberating women from their chains. Women’s from Iran,  before the revolution were not entirely treated equal to men, but despite some cultural perceptions of women being inferior to men, they had made progress to become socially equal under the Shah. Theories have been published and studied to show the inequality of women versus men because of Islam. However, contrasting theories have also been made to show that inequality has little to do with the religion, but instead with the forceful nature upon which it was implemented in the revolution. Betty Friedan wrote that â€Å"the only way for a woman, as for a man, to find herself, to know herself as a person, is by creative work of her own. † The message here is that women need more than just a husband, children, and a home to feel fulfilled; women need independence and creative outlets, unrestrained by the pressures of society. Throughout much of history, women have struggled with the limited roles society imposed on them.

How Mary Shelley Creates Sympathy For Monster English Literature Essay Essays

How Mary Shelley Creates Sympathy For Monster English Literature Essay Essays How Mary Shelley Creates Sympathy For Monster English Literature Essay Essay How Mary Shelley Creates Sympathy For Monster English Literature Essay Essay Mary Shelley might hold written Frankenstein because she was challenged by her hubby and Lord Byron to see who could compose the best horror narrative while they were remaining at Villa Diolati by Lake Geneva in Switzerland. Her male parent was interested in Galvanism- running electric currents through the organic structure to reconstruct it to life. In the book, Victor Frankenstein uses similar methods to make the monster. She was besides influenced by the plants of Samuel Taylor and Aaron Burr. First, Shelley tries to make understanding for the monster by depicting his visual aspect in a alone yet hideous manner: he s gigantic ; about eight pess ; deformed ; black lips and in conclusion, yellow tegument barely covered the work of musculuss and arterias beneath . When you link these descriptions together, Shelley creates a vivid, unnatural image of the monster in the head s oculus. This creates understanding for the monster by doing him detestable to typical worlds. Normally when person is different in the society, they are pitied, oppressed or threatened by the bulk. Second, Shelley tries to make understanding for the monster the remarks Victor makes behind his dorsum. He says before doing him that he hoped his creative activity would bless him as his creator . He besides believed the monster to hold happy and excellent nature and be beautiful . His words betrayed him when the monster was created. Alternatively of his work being beautiful, he says he s a filthy creative activity , he s ugly , horrid and a demonical cadaver . This makes us sympathize for the monster because his male parent, his Godhead detests him. If the adult male that should be his male parent does non like him, it does non give him much hope with other people. The pick of words here are really affectional, it makes the reader feel understanding and sorrow for the monster. Frankenstein s brother, William, besides detests the monster ; he states he s a monster! An ugly wretch! and an monster . This besides makes us experience poignance for the monster because even though he has done no injury to William at that point, he is able to be prejudice merely by looking at his visual aspect. Third, Shelley tries to make understanding for the monster through remarks said to his face, Frankenstein says he s a vile insect , and besides adds cursed be the twenty-four hours in which you foremost saw light! The linguistic communication Shelly uses here is really powerful and affectional. He farther goes on to state, Shall I create another similar yourself, whose articulations evil might abandon the universe? This is even harsher as it is coming from his Godhead. It makes the reader want to soothe the monster and assist him. He is lonely. All it wants is person to wish him, person who would handle him like he s a individual, non a thing or an insect. Fourthly, Shelley tries to make understanding for the monster through what people do to him. Victor sprang on him and he flung his custodies from his eyes with force . This makes the reader feel sorry for the monster by doing the monster sound helpless. He does nt merit this intervention. Victor farther goes on to tear up his girlfriend to pieces- merely because the monster happened to be smiling at her. We feel empathy for the monster because it makes us gain that he has feelings like everyone else. A adult male in the forests merely took one glimpse and he tore the miss from his weaponries aimed a gun at his organic structure, and fired . This makes us gain how dismaying people behave towards him. The adult male does nt even give a opportunity to explicate his ground for keeping the girl- his visual aspect is good plenty. These actions make us experience commiseration for him because we know he is guiltless and all he wants is a friend. The 5th manner Shelley tries to do us experience sorry for the monster is through peoples reaction to him. Victor could nt and would nt look at him ; he was unable to digest the facet of being he had created . He thinks of his creative activity as a putrid barbarian without believing hoe helpless and unwanted the monster feels by his male parent s reactions. We would nt wish it if children shrieked and women fainted merely from looking at us, would we? The 6th manner Shelley tries to make understanding for the monster is though his actions when he comes to life. The monster muttered some unarticulate sounds to Frankenstein, he so smiled at Frankenstein, a smile wrinkled his cheeks . When the monster tries to touch Victor, he reacted severely. If person rejected us merely for being ourselves, we would experience truly sad. When the monster turned off, disquieted, from a window he could see a miss fondly being lifted by her male parent. We feel sorry for the monster because we see how loving the adult male was to his kid while Frankenstein loathes the monster. Her pick of linguistic communication makes him sound vulnerable and emotional. He even wept when the household were upset, demoing he has feelings for others, non merely for himself. Finally Shelley attempts to make understanding for the monster through his address. He says all work forces hate the deplorable! These words create understanding for the monster because he knows he s been rejected by society for the manner he looks. It is nt his mistake the manner he looks. Peoples should hold given him a opportunity and judged him on his personality instead than his face. In decision, Mary Shelley makes us sympathize for the monster through his visual aspect, his actions, his address and how others react to him. She gets across this by her pick of words. She uses affectional linguistic communication brightly.

Amalgam Definition and Uses

Amalgam Definition and Uses An amalgam is a type of alloy found in dentistry, mining, mirrors and other applications. Here is a look at an amalgams composition, uses, and the risks associated with use. Key Takeaways: Amalgam Simply put, an amalgam is an alloy of the element mercury. While mercury is a liquid element, amalgams tend to harden.Amalgams are use to make dental fillings, to bind to precious metals so they can be isolated later, and to produce mirror coatings. As with elements in other alloys, a small amount of mercury may be released by contact with an amalgam. Because mercury is toxic, amalgams may present health or environmental risks. Amalgam Definition An amalgam the name given to any alloy of mercury. Mercury forms alloys with almost all other metals, except iron, tungsten, tantalum, and platinum. Amalgams may occur naturally (e.g., arquerite, a natural amalgam of mercury and silver) or may be synthesized. Key uses of amalgams are in dentistry, gold extraction, and chemistry. Amalgamation (the formation of an amalgam) is usually an exothermic process that results in hexagonal or other structural forms. Amalgam Types and Uses Because the word amalgam already indicates the presence of mercury, amalgams are generally named according to the other metals in the alloy. Examples of important amalgams include: Dental Amalgam Dental amalgam is the name given to any amalgam used in dentistry. Amalgam is used as a restorative material (i.e., for fillings) because its fairly easy to shape once mixed, but hardens into a tough substance. Its also inexpensive. Most dental amalgam consists of mercury with silver. Other metals that may be used with or in place of silver include indium, copper, tin, and zinc. Traditionally, amalgam was stronger and longer-lasting than composite resins, but modern resins are more durable than they used to be and strong enough for use on teeth subject to wear, such as molars. There are disadvantages to using dental amalgam. Some people are allergic to the mercury or other elements in amalgam. According to Colgate, the American Dental Association (ADA) reports fewer than 100 cases of amalgam allergy have been reported, so its very rare. A more significant risk is posed by the release of small amounts of mercury vapor as the amalgam wears over time. This is primarily a concern for persons already exposed to mercury in daily life. Its recommended pregnant women avoid getting amalgam fillings. The ADA does not recommend getting existing amalgam fillings removed (unless they are worn or the tooth is damaged) because the removal process can damage existing healthy tissue and may result in the unnecessary release of mercury. When an amalgam filling is removed, a dentist uses suction to minimize mercury exposure and takes steps to prevent mercury from entering the plumbing. Silver and Gold Amalgam Mercury is used to recover silver and gold from their ores because the precious metals readily amalgamate (form an amalgam). There are different methods of using mercury with gold or silver, depending on the situation. In general, the ore is exposed to mercury and the heavy amalgam is recovered and processed to separate the mercury from the other metal. The patio process was developed in 1557 in Mexico to process silver ores, although silver amalgam is also used in the Washoe process and in panning for the metal. To extract gold, a slurry of crushed ore can be mixed with mercury or run across mercury-coated copper plates. A process called retorting separates the metals. Amalgam is heated in a distillation retort. The high vapor pressure of mercury allows for easy separation and recovery for re-use. Amalgam extraction has largely been replaced by other methods because of environmental concerns. Amalgam slugs may be found downstream of old mining operations to the present day. Retorting also released mercury in the form of vapor. Other Amalgams In the mid-19th century, tin amalgam was used as a reflective mirror coating for surfaces. Zinc amalgam is used in the Clemmensen Reduction for organic synthesis and the Jones reductor for analytical chemistry. Sodium amalgam is used as a reducing agent in chemistry. Aluminum amalgam is used to reduce imines to amines. Thallium amalgam is used in low temperature thermometers because it has a lower freezing point than pure mercury. Although normally considered a combination of metals, other substances may be considered amalgams. For example, ammonium amalgam (H3N-Hg-H), discovered by Humphry Davy and Jons Jakob Berzelius, is a substance that decomposes when it comes into contact with water or alcohol or in air at room temperature. The decomposition reaction forms ammonia, hydrogen gas, and mercury. Detecting Amalgam Because mercury salts dissolve in water to form toxic ions and compounds, its important to be able to detect the element in the environment. An amalgam probe is a piece of copper foil to which a nitric acid salt solution has been applied. If the probe is dipped in water that contains mercury ions, a copper amalgam forms on the foil and discolors it. Silver also reacts with copper to form spots, but they are easily rinsed away, while amalgam remains.

Social Responsibility of a Business Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Social Responsibility of a Business - Term Paper Example This famous claim by Friedman however triggered a debate on what the social responsibility of a business is. The businessperson Mackey disagreed with Friedman’s thought terming it as narrow and underselling humanitarian aspect of capitalism. Mackey strongly believes that the social responsibility of a business is not only to increase profits but also to create value for all the stakeholders in the business. Mackey argues that the social responsibility of a business to shareholders, society, and the stakeholders are varied and all are satisfied in different ways, which should be taken seriously by any kind of business to be successful. I strongly agree with Mackey that the social responsibility of a business is not only to increase profits, but also to satisfy the needs of the society, shareholders, and stakeholders, which are as well important. Social responsibility of business to stakeholders The stakeholders in a business comprise the community, employees, suppliers, and cli entele. According to Mackey (2005), all these stakeholders draw the meaning of the business in their own way of satisfaction. It is worth noting that the groups’ needs are varied as well and the needs are satisfied in different ways. ... Satisfied employees in any business will translate into efficiency and quality output, which are valuable assets to the business. The social responsibility of a business to employees include, good working conditions and attractive salaries and wages, social security such as insurance and pension schemes, better living standards among others. Suppliers are as well important to a business and therefore there is need for a business to satisfy the suppliers socially. Mackey believes that all the stakeholders in a business are important for a business to attain its goals. Suppliers supply business raw materials needed to produce certain goods or services and it is their responsibility as well to get the finished products close to the customers. For the smooth functioning of the business, the social function of the business is to give them a fair deal in the business. Social responsibility of a business to shareholders The shareholders in layman’s term are the owners of a business a nd the social responsibility of the business is to satisfy their needs. Although most shareholders majorly focus on increased profits, Mackey admits this though in a different perspective. According to Mackey, profits maximization should not be the soul goal for a business but the business need to put first the interest of the entire stakeholders. Mackey (2005) argues that by putting first the interest of the stakeholders by value creation, this will act as a means to an end. As the business works hard towards maximizing profits for the investors, it is important to bear in mind that by satisfying the customers and other stakeholders, the profits are likely to increase. The shareholders being the owners of

In addition, the basic meaning of the article is that Apple is ready to lead in the production of innovative health care products that both prevent and manage diseases. The article, moreover, will help me succeed in class and my employment because it inspires me to also find new innovations where I can use my strengths as distinct advantages. First, the article has the elements of strategic analysis, strategic choice, and strategic implementation (Kew and Stredwick 205). Apple has a vision of being a leader of innovative products that can change industries for the better (Hull). The Apple Watch represents Apple’s vision as it enters an industry that it is new to it too. This is similar to Nintendo’s Wii that became a health care product when it promoted physical activity that has entertainment and social value. Apple Watch is an innovation that can help Apple become a more familiar brand in the health care sector. Moreover, Apple shows that its strategic choice is about innovation. It is not afraid of promoting change, as its watch combines prevention and disease management (Tozzi). Furthermore, the strategic implementation of Apple is to start with a product that is already based on linking existing systems. For instance, Tozzi says: â€Å"HealthKit will plug into electronic health records from Epic and o ther providers, enabling smoother communication between doctors and patients.† Apple Watch shows that the strategic choice is about improving how systems can work together, and how it can offer something new now and in the future. Apart from these elements of strategic management, the article has the basic meaning that Apple is ready to lead in the production of innovative health care products that both prevent and manage diseases. Apple Watch can help people

Clay Loading and Dispersion Effects on the Rheological Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Nanocomposites :: essays research papers

Clay Loading and Dispersion Effects on the Rheological Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Nanocomposites The objective of this work is to characterize the influence of clay loading and dispersion effects on the rheological properties of unsaturated polyester composites. Toughened unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were synthesized by the blending of delaminated clay with unsaturated polyester. Rheological behavior is shown to be strongly influenced by clay loading and the extent of clay dispersion in the polymer matrix. Transition from liquid-like behavior to solid-like behavior shifts to significantly higher solids loading at higher shear rates which may be due to the alignment of the particles in the direction of flow at high shear rates. SEM micrographs are used to display the extent of intercalation and dispersion of the clay within the polymer matrix. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND 1.1 Definition Polymer/clay nanocomposites display a change in composition and structure over a nanometer length scale and have been shown to present considerable property enhancements relative to conventionally scaled composites. Layered silicates dispersed as a reinforcing phase in an engineering polymer matrix are one of the most important of such â€Å"hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites† [1]. Polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites containing low levels of exfoliated clays, such as montmorillonite and vermiculite have a structure consisting of platelets with at least one dimension in the nanometer range. One of the most important features of polymeric materials is the possibility of controlling their macroscopic physical properties by tailored manipulation of their structures at a nanoscopic scale. To influence the interactions that govern the mechanical properties of polymers, specific nanoscopic scale reinforcement is efficient and beneficial. For example, montmorillonite clay pro vides such reinforcement through the interaction of polymer chains with the charged surfaced of clay lamellae [2]. The use of organoclays as precursors to nanocomposite formation has been extended into various polymer systems including epoxies, polyurethanes, polyimides, nitrile rubber, polyesters, polypropylene, polystyrene and polysiloxanes, among others. Even a variety of inorganic materials, such as glass fibers, talc, calcium carbonate, and clay minerals, have been successfully used as additives or reinforcements to improve the various properties of polymers [3-10]. 1.2 Structure The optimal properties of nanocomposites arise as the clay nanolayers are uniformly dispersed (exfoliated) in the polymer matrix, as opposed to being aggregated or phase separated as tactoids or simply intercalated. As nanolayer exfoliation becomes achieved, there is a trend in the improvement in desired properties that is manifested as an increase in tensile properties, enhancement of barrier properties, a decrease in solvent uptake, an increase in thermal stability and flame retardance, among others [11-12].

Lesson Plan Essay

â€Å"In modern times there are opposing views about the practice of education. There is no general agreement about what the young should learn either in relation to virtue or in relation to the best life; nor is it clear whether their education ought to be directed more towards the intellect than towards the character of the soul†¦. And it is not certain whether training should be directed at things useful in life, or at those conducive to virtue, or at non-essentials†¦. And there is no agreement as to what in fact does tend towards virtue. Men do not all prize most highly the same virtue, so naturally they differ also about the proper training for it. † Aristotle wrote that passage more than 2,300 years ago, and today educators are still debating the issues he raised. Different approaches to resolving these and other fundamental issues have given rise to different schools of thought in the philosophy of education. We will examine five such schools of thought: Essentialism, Progressivism, Perennialism, Existentialism, and Behaviorism. Each has many supporters in American education today. Taken together, these five schools of thought do not exhaust the list of possible educational philosophies you may adopt, but they certainly present strong frameworks from which you can create your own educational philosophy. Essentialism â€Å"Gripping and enduring interests frequently grow out of initial learning efforts that are not appealing or attractive. † William Bagley Essentialism refers to the â€Å"traditional† or â€Å"Back to the Basics† approach to education. It is so named because it strives to instill students with the â€Å"essentials† of academic knowledge and character development. The term essentialism as an educational philosophy was originally popularized in the 1930s by the American educator William Bagley (1874A1946). The philosophy itself, however, had been the dominant approach to education in America from the beginnings of American history. Early in the twentieth century, essentialism was criticized as being too rigid to prepare students adequately for adult life. But with the launching of Sputnik in 1957, interest in essentialism revived. Among modern supporters of this position are members of the President’s Commission on Excellence in Education. Their 1983 report, A Nation at Risk, mirrors essentialist concerns today. Underlying Philosophical Basis (American) essentialism is grounded in a conservative philosophy that accepts the social, political, and economic structure of American society. It contends that schools should not try to radically reshape society. Rather, essentialists argue, American schools should transmit the traditional moral values and intellectual knowledge that students need to become model citizens. Essentialists believe that teachers should instill such traditional American virtues as respect for authority, perseverance, fidelity to duty, consideration for others, and practicality. Reflecting its conservative philosophy, essentialism ten(tends to accept the philosophical views associated with the traditional, conservative elements of American society. For example, American culture traditionally has l)placed tremendous emphasis on the central importance of tile physical world and of understanding the world through scientific experimentation. As a result, to convey important knowledge about our world, essentialist educators emphasize instruction in natural science rather than non-scientific disciplines such as philosophy or comparative religion. The Essentialist Classroom Essentialists urge that the most essential or basic academic skills and knowledge be taught to all students. Traditional disciplines such as math, natural science, history, foreign language, and literature form the foundation of the essentialist curriculum. Essentialists frown upon vocational, lift-adjustment, or other courses with â€Å"watered down† academic content. Elementary students receive instruction in skills such as writing, reading, measurement, and computers. Even while learning art and music, subjects most often associated with the development of creativity, the students are required to master a body of information and basic techniques, gradually moving from less to more complex skills and detailed knowledge. Only by mastering the required material for their grade level are students promote(l to the next higher grade. Essentialist programs are academically rigorous, for both slow and fast learners. The report A Nation at Risk reflects the essentialist emphasis on rigor. It calls for more core requirements, a longer school day, a longer academic year, and more challenging textbooks. Moreover, essentialists maintain that classrooms should be oriented around the teacher, who ideally serves as an intellectual and moral role model for the students. The teachers or administrators decide what is most important for the students to learn and place little emphasis on student interests, particularly when they divert time and attention from the academic curriculum. Essentialist teachers focus heavily on achievement test scores as a means of evaluating progress. In an essentialist classroom, students are taught to be â€Å"culturally literate,† that is, to possess a working knowledge about the people, events, ideas, and institutions that have shaped American society. Reflecting the essentialist emphasis on technological literacy, A Nation at Risk recommends that all high school students complete at least one semester of computer science. Essentialists hope that when students leave school, they will possess not only basic skills and an extensive body of knowledge, but also disciplined, practical minds, capable of applying schoolhouse lessons in the real world. Progressivism We may, I think, discover certain common principles amid the variety of progressive schools now existing. To imposition from above is opposed expression and cultivation of individuality; to external discipline is opposed free activity; to learning from texts and teachers, learning through experience; to acquisition of’ isolated skills and techniques by drill is opposed acquisition of them as means of attaining ends which make direct vital appeal; to preparation for a more or less remote future is opposed making the most of the opportunities of present life; to statistics and materials is opposed acquaintance with a changing world. John Dewey Progressivism’s respect for individuality, its high regard for science, and its receptivity to change harmonized well with the American environment in which it was created. The person most responsible for the success of progressivism was John Dewey (1859-1952). Dewey entered the field of education as a liberal social reformer with a background in philosophy and psychology. In 1896, while a professor at the University of Chicago, Dewey ounded the famous Laboratory School as a testing ground for his educational ideas. Dewey’s writings and his work with the Laboratory School set the stage for the progressive education movement, which, beginning in the 1920s, has produced major lasting innovations in American education. The progressivist movement stimulated schools to broaden their curricula, making education more relevant to the needs and interests of students. Its influence waned during the 1950s, particularly after the 1957 launching of Sputnik by the Soviets prompted schools to emphasize traditional instruction in math, science, foreign languages, and other defense-related subjects. In the late 1960s and 1970s, under the guise of citizenship education and educational relevance, many of Dewey’s ideas enjoyed a renewed popularity that decreased again during the education reform movement of the 1980s.

Climate Warming Global Warming Essay - 1095 Words

The climate on the Earth is changing. Currently, the temperature of the earth’s climate system continues to rapidly increase which leads to global warming. Global warming, by definition is the â€Å"gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants†(Webster’s). There are many reasons why global warming occurs, such as human activities and the increasing of gases; for instance carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To reduce the issue, about 200 countries have signed Kyoto Protocol that states that they must lower four greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Convention on climate change and it commits the Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When one hears the term â€Å"global warming,† the first thing that comes to mind is the greenhouse effect. The greenhouses allow sunlight to enter through the windows and then the sunlight heats the interior by trapping the heat. The same thing occurs within the plants, solar radiation is basically absorbed by the Earth’s surface therefore resulting in the warming of the Earth. There is nothing wrong with the greenhouse effect as long as some radiation can escape back into space. We need the greenhouse effect because without it nothing would even survive on the Earth.
