Clay Loading and Dispersion Effects on the Rheological Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Nanocomposites :: essays research papers
Clay Loading and Dispersion Effects on the Rheological Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Nanocomposites The objective of this work is to characterize the influence of clay loading and dispersion effects on the rheological properties of unsaturated polyester composites. Toughened unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were synthesized by the blending of delaminated clay with unsaturated polyester. Rheological behavior is shown to be strongly influenced by clay loading and the extent of clay dispersion in the polymer matrix. Transition from liquid-like behavior to solid-like behavior shifts to significantly higher solids loading at higher shear rates which may be due to the alignment of the particles in the direction of flow at high shear rates. SEM micrographs are used to display the extent of intercalation and dispersion of the clay within the polymer matrix. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND 1.1 Definition Polymer/clay nanocomposites display a change in composition and structure over a nanometer length scale and have been shown to present considerable property enhancements relative to conventionally scaled composites. Layered silicates dispersed as a reinforcing phase in an engineering polymer matrix are one of the most important of such ââ¬Å"hybrid organic-inorganic nanocompositesâ⬠[1]. Polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites containing low levels of exfoliated clays, such as montmorillonite and vermiculite have a structure consisting of platelets with at least one dimension in the nanometer range. One of the most important features of polymeric materials is the possibility of controlling their macroscopic physical properties by tailored manipulation of their structures at a nanoscopic scale. To influence the interactions that govern the mechanical properties of polymers, specific nanoscopic scale reinforcement is efficient and beneficial. For example, montmorillonite clay pro vides such reinforcement through the interaction of polymer chains with the charged surfaced of clay lamellae [2]. The use of organoclays as precursors to nanocomposite formation has been extended into various polymer systems including epoxies, polyurethanes, polyimides, nitrile rubber, polyesters, polypropylene, polystyrene and polysiloxanes, among others. Even a variety of inorganic materials, such as glass fibers, talc, calcium carbonate, and clay minerals, have been successfully used as additives or reinforcements to improve the various properties of polymers [3-10]. 1.2 Structure The optimal properties of nanocomposites arise as the clay nanolayers are uniformly dispersed (exfoliated) in the polymer matrix, as opposed to being aggregated or phase separated as tactoids or simply intercalated. As nanolayer exfoliation becomes achieved, there is a trend in the improvement in desired properties that is manifested as an increase in tensile properties, enhancement of barrier properties, a decrease in solvent uptake, an increase in thermal stability and flame retardance, among others [11-12].

Lesson Plan Essay
ââ¬Å"In modern times there are opposing views about the practice of education. There is no general agreement about what the young should learn either in relation to virtue or in relation to the best life; nor is it clear whether their education ought to be directed more towards the intellect than towards the character of the soulâ⬠¦. And it is not certain whether training should be directed at things useful in life, or at those conducive to virtue, or at non-essentialsâ⬠¦. And there is no agreement as to what in fact does tend towards virtue. Men do not all prize most highly the same virtue, so naturally they differ also about the proper training for it. â⬠Aristotle wrote that passage more than 2,300 years ago, and today educators are still debating the issues he raised. Different approaches to resolving these and other fundamental issues have given rise to different schools of thought in the philosophy of education. We will examine five such schools of thought: Essentialism, Progressivism, Perennialism, Existentialism, and Behaviorism. Each has many supporters in American education today. Taken together, these five schools of thought do not exhaust the list of possible educational philosophies you may adopt, but they certainly present strong frameworks from which you can create your own educational philosophy. Essentialism ââ¬Å"Gripping and enduring interests frequently grow out of initial learning efforts that are not appealing or attractive. â⬠William Bagley Essentialism refers to the ââ¬Å"traditionalâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Back to the Basicsâ⬠approach to education. It is so named because it strives to instill students with the ââ¬Å"essentialsâ⬠of academic knowledge and character development. The term essentialism as an educational philosophy was originally popularized in the 1930s by the American educator William Bagley (1874A1946). The philosophy itself, however, had been the dominant approach to education in America from the beginnings of American history. Early in the twentieth century, essentialism was criticized as being too rigid to prepare students adequately for adult life. But with the launching of Sputnik in 1957, interest in essentialism revived. Among modern supporters of this position are members of the Presidentââ¬â¢s Commission on Excellence in Education. Their 1983 report, A Nation at Risk, mirrors essentialist concerns today. Underlying Philosophical Basis (American) essentialism is grounded in a conservative philosophy that accepts the social, political, and economic structure of American society. It contends that schools should not try to radically reshape society. Rather, essentialists argue, American schools should transmit the traditional moral values and intellectual knowledge that students need to become model citizens. Essentialists believe that teachers should instill such traditional American virtues as respect for authority, perseverance, fidelity to duty, consideration for others, and practicality. Reflecting its conservative philosophy, essentialism ten(tends to accept the philosophical views associated with the traditional, conservative elements of American society. For example, American culture traditionally has l)placed tremendous emphasis on the central importance of tile physical world and of understanding the world through scientific experimentation. As a result, to convey important knowledge about our world, essentialist educators emphasize instruction in natural science rather than non-scientific disciplines such as philosophy or comparative religion. The Essentialist Classroom Essentialists urge that the most essential or basic academic skills and knowledge be taught to all students. Traditional disciplines such as math, natural science, history, foreign language, and literature form the foundation of the essentialist curriculum. Essentialists frown upon vocational, lift-adjustment, or other courses with ââ¬Å"watered downâ⬠academic content. Elementary students receive instruction in skills such as writing, reading, measurement, and computers. Even while learning art and music, subjects most often associated with the development of creativity, the students are required to master a body of information and basic techniques, gradually moving from less to more complex skills and detailed knowledge. Only by mastering the required material for their grade level are students promote(l to the next higher grade. Essentialist programs are academically rigorous, for both slow and fast learners. The report A Nation at Risk reflects the essentialist emphasis on rigor. It calls for more core requirements, a longer school day, a longer academic year, and more challenging textbooks. Moreover, essentialists maintain that classrooms should be oriented around the teacher, who ideally serves as an intellectual and moral role model for the students. The teachers or administrators decide what is most important for the students to learn and place little emphasis on student interests, particularly when they divert time and attention from the academic curriculum. Essentialist teachers focus heavily on achievement test scores as a means of evaluating progress. In an essentialist classroom, students are taught to be ââ¬Å"culturally literate,â⬠that is, to possess a working knowledge about the people, events, ideas, and institutions that have shaped American society. Reflecting the essentialist emphasis on technological literacy, A Nation at Risk recommends that all high school students complete at least one semester of computer science. Essentialists hope that when students leave school, they will possess not only basic skills and an extensive body of knowledge, but also disciplined, practical minds, capable of applying schoolhouse lessons in the real world. Progressivism We may, I think, discover certain common principles amid the variety of progressive schools now existing. To imposition from above is opposed expression and cultivation of individuality; to external discipline is opposed free activity; to learning from texts and teachers, learning through experience; to acquisition ofââ¬â¢ isolated skills and techniques by drill is opposed acquisition of them as means of attaining ends which make direct vital appeal; to preparation for a more or less remote future is opposed making the most of the opportunities of present life; to statistics and materials is opposed acquaintance with a changing world. John Dewey Progressivismââ¬â¢s respect for individuality, its high regard for science, and its receptivity to change harmonized well with the American environment in which it was created. The person most responsible for the success of progressivism was John Dewey (1859-1952). Dewey entered the field of education as a liberal social reformer with a background in philosophy and psychology. In 1896, while a professor at the University of Chicago, Dewey ounded the famous Laboratory School as a testing ground for his educational ideas. Deweyââ¬â¢s writings and his work with the Laboratory School set the stage for the progressive education movement, which, beginning in the 1920s, has produced major lasting innovations in American education. The progressivist movement stimulated schools to broaden their curricula, making education more relevant to the needs and interests of students. Its influence waned during the 1950s, particularly after the 1957 launching of Sputnik by the Soviets prompted schools to emphasize traditional instruction in math, science, foreign languages, and other defense-related subjects. In the late 1960s and 1970s, under the guise of citizenship education and educational relevance, many of Deweyââ¬â¢s ideas enjoyed a renewed popularity that decreased again during the education reform movement of the 1980s.

Climate Warming Global Warming Essay - 1095 Words
The climate on the Earth is changing. Currently, the temperature of the earthââ¬â¢s climate system continues to rapidly increase which leads to global warming. Global warming, by definition is the ââ¬Å"gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutantsâ⬠(Websterââ¬â¢s). There are many reasons why global warming occurs, such as human activities and the increasing of gases; for instance carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. To reduce the issue, about 200 countries have signed Kyoto Protocol that states that they must lower four greenhouse gases. The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Convention on climate change and it commits the Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When one hears the term ââ¬Å"global warming,â⬠the first thing that comes to mind is the greenhouse effect. The greenhouses allow sunlight to enter through the windows and then the sunlight heats the interior by trapping the heat. The same thing occurs within the plants, solar radiation is basically absorbed by the Earthââ¬â¢s surface therefore resulting in the warming of the Earth. There is nothing wrong with the greenhouse effect as long as some radiation can escape back into space. We need the greenhouse effect because without it nothing would even survive on the Earth. Creation, Flood and the Hero in Epic of Gilgamesh and...
Another similarity is the fall of man and the search for everlasting life. The snake is represented in both of the stories. Gilgamesh is searching for everlasting life, and the everlasting life is within a flower. Gilgamesh finds the flower but is confronted by the snake and drops it. However, in Genesis, a snake confronted Adam and Eve. It was Eve who would not have even thought about eating the forbidden fruit without the snake tempting her. She then turns around and offers the fruit to Adam. This causes them to know about sin. As a result of their sin it continues throughout all mankind. This causes God to Flood the earth. When the flood came it was all over the world in both of the books. Noah and Utnapishtim were both righteous men. They were both told to build a boat and they both complained about it. The flood was a result of manââ¬â¢s wickedness. Utnapishtim said ââ¬Å"the world teemed, the people multiplies, the world bellowed like a wild bull, and the great god was aroused by the clamourâ⬠. Female Oppression in Jane Eyre Essay - 1600 Words
Throughout Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontà « uses the character Jane as a tool to comment on the oppression that women were forced to endure at the time. Jane can be seen as representative of the women who suffered from repression during the Victorian period, a time when patriarchy was commonplace. Brontà « herself was affected by the time period, because according to Wolfe, she was deprived ââ¬Å"experience and intercourse and travel.â⬠(70) Thus Jane offers a unique perspective as a woman who is both keenly aware of her position and yet trapped by it despite repeated attempts to elevate herself and escape the burden placed on by her different suitors. Although superficially it seems that Jane wants to break away from the relationships that furtherâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Even in her state of anger she cannot help but once again be the restrained and subdued one in their relationship. Despite all of the happiness she has found with Rochester she still cannot bring herself t o stay in a relationship in which she sacrifices part of herself, because she doesnââ¬â¢t know how to reconcile her need feel like she belongs and is taken care of while at the same time remaining uncorrupted. Over the course of the novel it becomes clear that Jane is two separate people one practical and honest, the other simply a lonely girl looking for a place to belong. The question becomes how she will resolve the tension between each of these Janeââ¬â¢s who seem to be at odds with one another. This divergence is represented by her struggle to leave Thornfield, and when making that choice we see a distinct conflict between her conscious and passion. She refers to her conscience as a ââ¬Å"tyrantâ⬠taunting passion and threatening it with agony. (335) Moreover, Jane also says that it has an ââ¬Å"arm of ironâ⬠which alludes to its strength and foreshadows which of the two will eventually win. Succubus Shadows Chapter 4 Free Essays
I spent the whole morning waiting restlessly for Roman. Surely he had to come home at some point to sleep, right? Of course, being part greater immortal, heââ¬â¢d have a lot of the traits of his angelic parentage ââ¬â and angels and demons never needed to sleep. Roman could likely get by on very little rest and simply chose to sleep in as often as he did for the fun of it. I also kind of wished I hadnââ¬â¢t parted from Carter so soon. Caught up in the Pictionary absurdity, Iââ¬â¢d totally forgotten about my siren song encounters. Indeed, Iââ¬â¢d nearly written them off until last nightââ¬â¢s repeat. But if Jerome was hard to get a hold of, Carter was impossible. He kept no cell phone and seemed to take personal pride in showing up at unexpected moments. Left with no other options, I called my friend Erik. He was a human who ran a store specializing in esoteric and pagan goods. He was often my backup for bizarre supernatural situations, sometimes knowing more than my friends did. As I dialed his storeââ¬â¢s number, I couldnââ¬â¢t help but marvel at the circles my life seemed to run on. I was repeating the same pattern over and over. Something weird would happen, Iââ¬â¢d fruitlessly attempt to contact my superiors, and end up seeking Erik for help. ââ¬Å"Why the fuck does this keep happening to me?â⬠I muttered as the phone rang. Cody never got stalked by paranormal forces. Neither did any of the others. It was like I was specifically being targeted. Or cursed. Or simply imbued with bad luck. When do you finish work?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll probably be free at ten.â⬠Another evening shift. ââ¬Å"I can meet you then.â⬠I felt bad. He said heââ¬â¢d do it, and Iââ¬â¢d seen him when he was obstinate. I had nothing to do but wait now and hope Roman would surface before I had to work. When he didnââ¬â¢t, I simply left him a note saying I needed to talk to him immediately. It was the best I could do. At work, no one was out or ââ¬â best of all ââ¬â hungover. I was caught up on my paperwork, which gave me a lot of free time. Whether that was good or bad, I couldnââ¬â¢t say. It kept me from messing up my job but merely left me in a cycle of rumination. It was nearly closing time when I noticed Seth at his usual station in the caf?à ¦. Maddie had worked the day shift, which meant I didnââ¬â¢t have to face their cute couple antics. He caught my eye as I walked through, and against my better judgment, I sat down across from him. ââ¬Å"How goes it?â⬠I asked. My usual romantic fixation with him was put on pause when I saw that he looked agitated. He tapped the screen in annoyance. ââ¬Å"Bad. Iââ¬â¢ve been staring at this screen for two hours and havenââ¬â¢t gotten anything done.â⬠He paused. ââ¬Å"No, thatââ¬â¢s not quite true. I ordered a Wonder Twins T-shirt and watched some videos on YouTube.â⬠I smiled and propped my chin up in my hand. ââ¬Å"Doesnââ¬â¢t sound like a bad dayââ¬â¢s work.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is when itââ¬â¢s been going on all week. My muse is an ungrateful harlot whoââ¬â¢s abandoned me to actually come up with my own plots.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s a record for you,â⬠I observed. Iââ¬â¢d seen him have fits of writerââ¬â¢s block when we dated, but it never lasted more than a few days. ââ¬Å"Whenââ¬â¢s your deadline?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not for a while, but stillâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He sighed. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like to be stalled out. Iââ¬â¢m not really sure what to do with my days if Iââ¬â¢m not writing.â⬠I started to say that he must have wedding stuff to do but then thought better of it. I kept to lighter topics. ââ¬Å"Maybe itââ¬â¢s time to pick up a hobby. Fencing? Origami?â⬠That slightly bemused smile that was so characteristic for him crossed his lips. ââ¬Å"I tried latch hook once.â⬠ââ¬Å"You did not.â⬠ââ¬Å"I did. Do you know how hard that is to do?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s actually pretty easy,â⬠I said, trying to hide my laughter. ââ¬Å"Kids do it, you know. Your nieces could probably do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"They can. And youââ¬â¢re not making me feel better.â⬠But those beautiful brown eyes were amused. I studied them for a moment, loving the way they would sometimes turn amber. A moment later, I snapped myself out of my lovesick spell. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s always dancing,â⬠I said mischievously. This made him laugh too. ââ¬Å"I think weââ¬â¢ve proven how futile that is.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d tried twice to teach him how to do it ââ¬â swing and salsa ââ¬â all with disastrous results. Sethââ¬â¢s talents lay in his mind, not his body. Well, upon further consideration, I realized that wasnââ¬â¢t entirely true. ââ¬Å"You havenââ¬â¢t found the right kind,â⬠I said. Iââ¬â¢d given up on hiding my grin. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s left? Riverdance? Square dancing? And do not even suggest jazz. I saw Newsies and was traumatized for, like, five years.â⬠ââ¬Å"Harsh,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You could still probably wear your T-shirts with jazz dancing. I know you must have a ââ¬ËDancing Queenââ¬â¢ shirt somewhere.â⬠His shirt today sported Chuck Norris. ââ¬Å"Unless, of course, you wanted some variety. Square dancers have some pretty sweet costumes.â⬠He shook his head in exasperation. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll leave the dancing getup to you. And no, no ââ¬ËDancing Queenââ¬â¢ shirt yet ââ¬â though I do have an Abba one. I think a ââ¬ËDancing Queenââ¬â¢ shirt would be better for you anyway, not me.â⬠His eyes moved from my face to what he could see of my body at the table. ââ¬Å"You look like you could go dancing right now.â⬠I started to feel myself flush at his gaze and immediately utilized shape-shifting to nix it. The unseasonably warm weather lent itself to sundresses, and I had another on today. It was a cream-colored trapeze, sleeveless with a keyhole top that may or may not have been showing managerial-appropriate cleavage. He wasnââ¬â¢t ogling me or anything, but I had learned long ago that Seth was good at keeping his emotions off of his face. I wondered what went through his mind. Simple aesthetic admiration? Lust? Disapproval of non-managerial cleavage? ââ¬Å"This old thing?â⬠I asked breezily, uncomfortable for reasons I couldnââ¬â¢t explain. ââ¬Å"You were wearing that color the first time we met.â⬠He suddenly seemed embarrassed. ââ¬Å"Not sure why I remember that.â⬠ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I was wearing purple.â⬠Now I felt flustered to remember that. He frowned in a way I found cute. ââ¬Å"Were you? Oh, yeah. I guess you were. The violet top and flowered skirt.â⬠Every detail. If heââ¬â¢d mentioned me wearing a snakeskin jacket, I might have passed out. Yet, I had a feeling he did remember that. Probably my shoes and the way Iââ¬â¢d styled my hair too. An awkward silence grew. I might have been keeping the flush off of my face, but there was warmth spreading through me. And only half of it was desire. The rest was something elseâ⬠¦something sweeter and deeper. I cleared my throat. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s the book about? Cady and Oââ¬â¢Neill, right?â⬠He nodded, looking grateful for the subject change. ââ¬Å"The usual. Mystery and intrigue, sexual tension and life-threatening situations.â⬠He hesitated. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the last one.â⬠ââ¬Å"I ââ¬â what?â⬠I felt my jaw drop. Whatever romantic feelings that had been stirring in me immediately got pushed to the back burner. ââ¬Å"You mean likeâ⬠¦the end of the series?â⬠Seth had written a lot of mysteries over his career, but Cady and Oââ¬â¢Neill ââ¬â his intrepid art and archaeology explorer duo ââ¬â was his flagship series. ââ¬Å"Why?â⬠He shrugged, eyes moving back to the laptop screen. ââ¬Å"Because itââ¬â¢s time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Howâ⬠¦how will you make your living?â⬠His smile turned wry as he looked back up at me. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve written other books that arenââ¬â¢t about them, Georgina. Besides, you donââ¬â¢t think my fansââ¬â¢ll have enough faith to follow me to a new series?â⬠ââ¬Å"True,â⬠I said softly. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll follow you anywhere.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d meant to say ââ¬Å"theyââ¬â¢ll,â⬠but it was too late. ââ¬Å"I hope so,â⬠he said, averting his eyes for a moment. When he looked back, I saw a spark of excitement. ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢m actually into doing something new. Iââ¬â¢ve got this idea ââ¬â and itââ¬â¢s really great. I just want to lose myself in it, you know?â⬠I did know. Iââ¬â¢d seen him forget parts of his real life plenty of times while caught up in a book. I wondered if this new project he was so enthusiastic about would intensify that zeal. ââ¬Å"So youââ¬â¢ve got the ending for Cady and Oââ¬â¢Neill figured out?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠he said with a sigh, glow dimming. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s the problem. I donââ¬â¢t know how this is going to end.â⬠I suddenly wondered if he was still talking about the books. Our gazes met again, and whatever might have come next was interrupted when Beth appeared at my side. ââ¬Å"Georgina? A friend of yours is here to see you.â⬠My heart leapt. Roman. Roman had read my note. His advice on that eerie siren song was about the only thing that could have dragged me away from Seth. I sprang up from my seat, giving Seth an apologetic look. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got to go.â⬠He nodded, some troubled emotion in his eyes that I couldnââ¬â¢t identify. That troubled me in return. He might be good at keeping his emotions off of his face, but at one time, Iââ¬â¢d been pretty good at figuring them out. ââ¬Å"No problem,â⬠he said. Wistfulness? Was that the mystery emotion? I couldnââ¬â¢t ponder it any longer. Roman was more important. I took the steps downstairs two at a time, anxious to see him. But when I reached the registers, where Beth had said my friend was waiting, it wasnââ¬â¢t Roman I saw. It was Cody. Or, well, I think it was. It took me a moment to figure it out. He was dressed all in black ââ¬â and not just jeans and a T-shirt. We were talking full regalia: a studded-leather jacket, steel-toed boots, and an ââ¬â ugh ââ¬â mesh shirt. His blond hair had black streaks in it, and heavy black eyeliner and lipstick over white foundation completed the look. I didnââ¬â¢t know what to say, so I simply grabbed his arm and dragged him into my office before anyone else could see him. ââ¬Å"What the hell are you doing?â⬠The sun had only just gone down, which meant he must have doubled the speed limit to make it here so quickly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m here to see Gabrielle,â⬠he explained, casting an anxious glance at my doorway. ââ¬Å"Where is she? I wanted to get here before you guys closed.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not working tonight.â⬠His face fell, but I couldnââ¬â¢t help but add, ââ¬Å"And honestly, I think thatââ¬â¢s a good thing.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why? Peter had a copy of The Seattle Sinner, and after going through it, we thought this would be the way to get her attention. He helped dress me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wait. Peter had a copy of ââ¬â ? Never mind. I donââ¬â¢t want to know. Believe me, you would have gotten her attention. But Iââ¬â¢m not sure itââ¬â¢d be the kind you want.â⬠Cody gestured to his attire. ââ¬Å"But sheââ¬â¢s into this scene. You said yourself that she dresses all in black.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠I admitted. ââ¬Å"But yours seemsâ⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t know. Overdone. People like her are always on the lookout for wannabes. You try too hard, and youââ¬â¢ll just put her further off.â⬠He sighed and slumped into my deskââ¬â¢s chair, dejected. ââ¬Å"Then what am I supposed to do? That newspaper was my only lead.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, for starters, donââ¬â¢t let Peter dress you again. Ever. As for the restâ⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t know. Let me ask around and see if I can get you more to go on. Just please donââ¬â¢t wear this outfit again.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠he agreed. Just then, Doug stuck his head in. It wasnââ¬â¢t his night to work, so I was kind of surprised, but not nearly as surprised as he was. ââ¬Å"Hey, Kincaid, I had a question about the schedu ââ¬â Jesus Fucking Christ! What is that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Cody,â⬠I said. Doug walked gingerly into the office and peered at Codyââ¬â¢s face. ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢ll be damned. It is. I thought it was the ghost of Gene Simmons.â⬠ââ¬Å"Gene Simmons isnââ¬â¢t dead,â⬠said Cody. ââ¬Å"Codyââ¬â¢s trying to impress Gabrielle,â⬠I explained. Doug opened his mouth, no doubt to comment on the impossibility of that, but I held up a hand to stop him. ââ¬Å"Yeah, yeah. I know. What did you need?â⬠Doug needed to switch some shifts, and without his ladylove around, Cody decided to leave. I let him out the back door, not wanting to cause a panic in the store. Once the schedule was set, Doug and I bantered about the Cody and Gabrielle situation. Before long, I lost track of time, and closing announcements were being made on the intercom. Doug said his farewells ââ¬â half afraid Iââ¬â¢d put him to work if he stayed ââ¬â and I set off to finish my own tasks. My meeting with Erik was getting closer, and I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension. An hour after the doors were locked, staff began to go home. I made one last sweep of the store and found Seth still sitting in the caf?à ¦. No surprise. My coworkers could never bring themselves to kick him out when we closed. Heââ¬â¢d actually gotten locked in once and accidentally set off the alarm. I walked over to his table, noting the enraptured look on his face as his fingers danced along the laptopââ¬â¢s keys. ââ¬Å"Hey, Mortensen,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t have to go home, but you canââ¬â¢t stay here.â⬠It took almost thirty seconds for him to look up, and even then, he seemed surprised to see me. ââ¬Å"Oh. Hey.â⬠I could feel a smile playing on my lips. This was picture perfect Seth behavior. ââ¬Å"Hey, weââ¬â¢re all closed down. Time to go.â⬠He glanced around, noting the dark windows and lack of people in the store. ââ¬Å"Oh, man. Sorry. I didnââ¬â¢t even notice.â⬠ââ¬Å"I take it the muse came back?â⬠ââ¬Å"She did.â⬠ââ¬Å"So you know how itââ¬â¢s going to end now?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. Not yet.â⬠I walked Seth to the back door and armed the alarm before letting myself out. He told me good-bye, and if heââ¬â¢d had any dreamy affection for me earlier in the night, it was gone now. His characters now consumed his heart. It was something Iââ¬â¢d had to accept when we were together, and watching him walk down the street, I decided that was how it should be. Sethââ¬â¢s writing was too much of his being. I let my own dreamy affection go and drove up north of the city to Erikââ¬â¢s store. I still felt a little bad about him meeting me so late, but the lights in his windows gleamed out into the night. And inside, the usual music and incense were going strong, just as they would during business hours. Glancing around, I didnââ¬â¢t see him right away. Then, I noticed him kneeling down in front of some palmistry books. ââ¬Å"Hey, Erik.â⬠ââ¬Å"Miss Kincaid.â⬠He rose to his feet, but the motions were jerky and unsteady. And when he finally turned to face me, there was a gauntness in his dark-skinned face that hadnââ¬â¢t been there the last time I saw him. My instinct was to rush over and support him, but I had a feeling he wouldnââ¬â¢t welcome that. Still, I asked the obvious. ââ¬Å"Are you okay? Have you been sick?â⬠He gave me a gentle smile and began moving ââ¬â slowly ââ¬â toward the storeââ¬â¢s main counter. ââ¬Å"A passing cold. They seem to last longer than they used to, but Iââ¬â¢ll be fine.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t so certain. Iââ¬â¢d known Erik for a long timeâ⬠¦. Iââ¬â¢d lost track of the years, actually. It wasnââ¬â¢t an uncommon thing with mortals, one that often blindsided me. One moment theyââ¬â¢d seem young and healthyâ⬠¦the next, they were old and dying. It never hurt any less, either. Part of the reason Seth had broken up with me was to spare me the pain of that loss because I began growing overly paranoid about his well-being. Now, watching Erik, I felt even worse for keeping him out so late. I also felt bad because I realized I never visited except when I needed something. When had I last seen him? Months ago, when Jerome had been summoned. Iââ¬â¢d sought Erikââ¬â¢s help then and hadnââ¬â¢t been by since. ââ¬Å"Tea?â⬠he offered, just like always. ââ¬Å"No, no. I donââ¬â¢t want to delay you,â⬠I said. I leaned against the counter and felt relieved when he settled down on a stool. ââ¬Å"I just wanted to ask you a couple things. Something weird happened.â⬠I almost laughed as the words left my mouth. That was such a typical opening statement for me. Again, that earlier thought returned: my life was one big circle, repeating and repeating. I gave him the rundown on my weird encounters with the unknown and ââ¬â for the large part ââ¬â indescribable force. He listened carefully, bushy gray eyebrows knit into a frown. ââ¬Å"I hate to tell you this,â⬠he said when I finished, ââ¬Å"but there are probably a number of things that could describe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Surprise, surprise,â⬠I murmured. That was more a commentary on my life, not his abilities. ââ¬Å"The fact that yourâ⬠¦uh, friend couldnââ¬â¢t identify it is intriguing.â⬠Erik was one of the handful of people who knew Roman was in Seattle. Erik had no interest in Heaven and Hellââ¬â¢s policies and wouldnââ¬â¢t be tattling anytime soon. ââ¬Å"Of course, he lacks the full skill set his relatives have. I donââ¬â¢t suppose youââ¬â¢ve spoken to any greater immortals?â⬠I shook my head. ââ¬Å"No. Theyââ¬â¢re notoriously absent, as usual. I think Iââ¬â¢ll be seeing Jerome soon.â⬠Heââ¬â¢d probably want to check in with Roman. ââ¬Å"So weââ¬â¢ll see then.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry I donââ¬â¢t have any ready answers. I never seem to.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not in the beginning,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"But you always come through in the end. More patterns.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hmm?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing,â⬠I said with a small sigh. ââ¬Å"Sometimes I just feel like the same things are happening to me over and over. Like, even this siren thing. Why me? In the last year, Iââ¬â¢ve been targeted over and over. What are the odds? Why does this keep happening?â⬠Erikââ¬â¢s eyes studied me for several moments. ââ¬Å"There are some people around whom the powers and supernatural beings of the world will always circle. You appear to be one of them.â⬠ââ¬Å"But why?â⬠I asked, surprised at the childish tone in my voice. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m just another succubus. There are tons of us out there. And why recently? Why only in the last year?â⬠It had to be the cruelest joke in the world that all these paranormal mishaps had started happening right when my romantic ones had. Apparently, one source of pain just wasnââ¬â¢t enough. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know,â⬠Erik admitted. ââ¬Å"Things change. Forces move that we canââ¬â¢t see.â⬠He paused and coughed, making me wince. How sick was he? ââ¬Å"Again, I feel like Iââ¬â¢m useless to you.â⬠I reached out and gently squeezed his shoulder. ââ¬Å"No, no. Youââ¬â¢re invaluable to me. I donââ¬â¢t know how I would have gotten by all these years without you.â⬠This earned me a smile. Wanting him to go to bed, I picked up my purse to leave. As I was heading to the door, he suddenly said, ââ¬Å"Miss Kincaid?â⬠I glanced back. ââ¬Å"Yeah?â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you still talk to Mr. Mortensen?â⬠The question caught me by surprise. Erik had been intrigued when Seth and I were dating, marveling at the connection between a human and a succubus, though he didnââ¬â¢t have the crazy obsession that Carter used to. ââ¬Å"Sure. Sometimes.â⬠My earlier conversation with Seth came back to me, the ease and warmth that had surrounded us. ââ¬Å"And things are amicable?â⬠ââ¬Å"More or less.â⬠Aside from his impending marriage, of course. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s good. It doesnââ¬â¢t always happen in these situations.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, I know. Although ââ¬â â⬠I bit off my words. Erik tilted his head, studying me curiously. ââ¬Å"Although what?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s amicable, except sometimesâ⬠¦sometimes this whole situation with him. Itââ¬â¢s like having my soul split in two.â⬠ââ¬Å"Understandable,â⬠he said. Those eyes burned with compassion, and I felt tears spring up in my own. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry I brought it up. I was just curious.â⬠I assured him it was okay and said good-bye again. The mention of Seth and the recollection of being with him earlier had made my mood go melancholy. I drove back to West Seattle, miserable that Iââ¬â¢d be helping with his wedding tomorrow and worried over Erikââ¬â¢s sickly state. As heavily as those thoughts weighed on me, they immediately flew from my mind as soon as I walked into my living room. ââ¬Å"Roman!â⬠He sat on the couch as he had last time, now eating a microwavable chicken pot pie. The TV was on, but he didnââ¬â¢t seem to be watching it. When he looked up at me, he didnââ¬â¢t wear that amused, teasing look. His expression was dark. Troubled, even. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve been waiting for you to get home,â⬠I exclaimed, tossing my purse and keys to the floor. ââ¬Å"You wonââ¬â¢t believe what happened.â⬠Roman sighed. ââ¬Å"No, you wonââ¬â¢t believe what happened.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, but this is ââ¬â ââ¬Å" He held up a hand to interrupt me. ââ¬Å"Let me get this out first. Itââ¬â¢s been driving me crazy.â⬠I swallowed my impatience. ââ¬Å"Okay. Iââ¬â¢ll bite. Does it have something to do with Simone?â⬠He nodded. ââ¬Å"Yeah. I followed her tonight to this twenty-four-hour coffee shop called Bird of Paradise.â⬠He eyed me carefully. ââ¬Å"Do you know it?â⬠Now I felt a frown creeping over my face. ââ¬Å"Yeahâ⬠¦itââ¬â¢s in Queen Anne, right around the corner from Emerald City. What was she doing there? I mean, aside from getting coffee?â⬠Romanââ¬â¢s expression turned darker and ââ¬â unless I was mistaken ââ¬â sympathetic. ââ¬Å"She was there hitting on a guy,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Seth.â⬠How to cite Succubus Shadows Chapter 4, Essay examples

Leading Major Projects and Programs
Question: Discuss about the Leading Major Projects and Programs. Answer: Introduction: Director is a person who supervises the company in leading the major projects and programs. Majority of companies are using this term at every different department to define roles. For e.g. director of human resources undertake the decisions related to human resource development and appraisal. According to Part 10 Directors and Company Secretaries Division 1 section 2(1) describes a director as a person who holds a position as a director or whatever name it is called as. Section 453 states that a public company or a company limited by guarantee must have at least 2 directors whereas section 454 states that a private company must have at least 1 director (Rogers, 2008) (New Company Ordinance, 2014). As per the given situation Downing Ltd is an IT company with Sam as a director. Simultaneously Sam was asked to work in Twilight Ltd which has similar business. Sam accepted the offer and remained the director of both companies. A director is found to be in a breach if he simultaneously operates two companies operating in similar business. It is mentioned clearly in the act that a person cannot be a director for two or more competing business at a same time. It is a part of an unfair method of competition under the Hong Kong Company Ordinance (Hong Kong CFA Decides on Directors' Duties and Conflict Of Interest, 2016). Director has a duty to avoid interest until and unless authorized. It is the duty of the director to disclose interest which is attached with the third party. Director has a duty to disclose any profit caused which is of material interest. In the given situation it is visible that the director has secretly joined another company without seeking permission from the other board member which is an ultra vires act. In Saloman V Saloman (Wan, 2012) it was decided that company and the individual are two separate entities. As per the case law the company and the individual should not be considered as one body. Company is a separate legal entity and it has all rights like a living entity. Director holds a fiduciary duty in the interest of the organization so he has to work in utmost faith in the goodwill (Guidelines for Directors, 2009).In the given case law of Extrasure Travel Insurance Ltd v. Scattergood the duty of a director is related with honesty and loyalty instead of competency. Duties of a director: A director has to work in utmost faith for the company. He is assigned with duty to act in good faith so that the goals of an organization could be attained. In case if his activities are against the goodwill of the company it will be considered as ultra vires (Paolini, 2014). He holds a fiduciary position in a company. The company conferred right to implement duties effectively in order to retrieve maximum result. In the given situation a director joined a similar company that may affect the interest of the company. Both are IT Company which deals in similar business. There are excess possibilities that the director might leak information to some outsider that might affect the interest of the company In Furs Ltd V Tomkies (Cassidy, 2006) the director has a duty to avoid secret profits. Director has no right to obtain a profitable situation on behalf of the company without disclosing material facts to the shareholders. In the decided case of Aberdeen Railway Co. v. Balikie Brothers the court stated that no question can be raised related to the fairness and unfairness of the contract to be entered. Directors are at breach if they enter into a contract with their own company. As per the given situation the director is found guilty of committing act without seeking permission as was directly mentioned in the memorandum that the director has no right to join a company with similar interest. It will affect the interest of the company. A company can take legal action against the director who is found guilty of the act. A director has a duty to disclose every kind of profit it is making outside the company. According art 16, Schedule 2 director who is in conflict of interest has no right to vote while passing a board resolution. Section 465 of the ordinance describes the duty of a director to exercise rights in a significant manner to avoid conflict of interest (Directors and Company Secretaries, 2014). In the case law of CMS Dolphin Ltd v Simonet (Virgo, 2015) it was stated that if a director holds a fiduciary place in the previous company then has no authority by law to utilize his contacts to create business. Similarly in Foster Bryant Surveying Ltd v Bryant (Barnett Scrope, 2008) it was stated that it is the fiduciary duty of the director to avoid conflict of interest. It is the duty of the director to avoid any possible condition related to conflict of interest which can even exists after a director ceases to be in employment. So it is not permissible under law to resign at one place and seek similar opportunity in present or after maturing even though he doesnt hold a position of director. In case if the director leaves the previous company and joins the other company which is dealing in similar goods. The director has to follow the letter of employment while dealing with such situation if it restricts him to join another organization of same business that may affect the previous organization. The company may restrict the director from joining a similar company as he might reveal the secrets of the company. In the given situation the director firstly joined another company without telling Downing Ltd. It is against the policies of the company. A director cannot hold two positions simultaneously. He has to disclose it in general meeting before the shareholders (Guidelines for Directors, 2009). Secondly as per the corporate governance the director has no right to provide similar interest to other companies. The company may disallow this act directly by putting restrictions on joining another competitive company. Both the companies are dealing in similar business and there are chances that the director might disclose the trade secrets to the new company as he has already signed deals with the clients of previous company. The director has committed an ultra vires act. The law does not allow him to seek an undue advantage by utilizing the clients of the previous business. This condition depicts the intention of the director behind joining the new business with similar interest. When a company gets to know that the director has breached any of the duty, the company has an authority under section 473(2) to ratify the deed(New Company Ordinance, 2014).The company has an authority to hold the voting power for which the ratification was done or to hold any share in the company. A liable director has to pay for the monetary damages he has caused to the company through his act. In this situation Mr. Sam is liable to pay for the damages as he has committed an act which was against the memorandum of the company. References Barnett,DScrope,H.(2008). Employment Law Handbook.
